An ultrasound-guided or mammography-guided biopsy improves future medical decisions by 100%, as it is the only reliable way to determine the nature of a tumour and whether it is benign or malignant.
The test involves taking a sample of cells or tissue through a fine (FNAB) or wide (CNB) needle for subsequent laboratory analysis. This percutaneous procedure is performed with an ultrasound or mammography guide.
It’s a very safe test, with a low rate of mild complications.
Needle biopsies are done whenever it is necessary to know the type of breast lesion and, in some cases, to remove benign tumours.
Although the technique is primarily diagnostic, it can also be therapeutic in the case of large simple cysts or abscesses in the breast.
