It is possible to detect breast cancer early.
Aspects that are taken into account in screening campaigns are:
▪ The age at which the patient falls within the risk group population
▪ The age at which the patient is excluded
▪ The screening method used.
Currently breast cancer screening programmes are carried out for high-risk women, those who are between the ages of 50 and 65 get mammograms every 1-2 years.
Recently, screening programmes are including women between the ages of 45-49 and 65-69.
Early diagnosis campaigns for women over 69 have not shown a benefit.
In women between the ages of 40 and 45 screening campaigns may only be advisable if there is high risk, such as genetic factors.
It should be kept in mind that mammography is less sensitive in women with dense breasts, as is the case in young women.
