Protect yourself from heat stroke!

Heat stroke is caused by an increase in body temperature when exposed to very high temperatures. It can lead to death if not treated quickly! Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable.

What symptoms does it cause?

 

• 1. Dizziness

 

• 2. Weakness

 

• 3. Warm and reddened skin, lack of perspiration

 

• 4. Headache and Drowsiness

 

• 5. Shaking

 

• 6. Seizures

 

• 7. Loss of consciousness

 

How can I prevent it?

• 1. Avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially during the hours in the middle of the day.

 

• 2. Use sun protection cream.

 

• 3. Wear lightweight, light-coloured clothes.

 

• 4. Cover your head with a cap or parasol

 

• 5. Do not stay in enclosed places such as the car

 

• 6. Spend most of your time in climate-controlled or shaded places.

 

• 7. Drink water or juice more frequently and eat fruit and vegetables.

 

• 8. Avoid alcohol and caffeine (both dehydrate).

 

• 9. 9. Go for a dip or a swim frequently.
• 10. Reduce physical activity during the middle of the day.

What should I do?

Seek emergency medical attention and try to reduce body temperature whilst preventing a sudden drop. Recommended measures include the following:

• 1. Move the affected person to a cool, ventilated place.

 

• 2. Remove clothes

 

• 3. Apply cool wet cloths to the neck, face and chest to lower body temperature. Avoid baths with very cold water, avoid submerging the person, as a sudden change in temperature can lead to complications

 

• 4. Raise their legs

 

• 5. Give plenty of water (ensure not very cold) to drink
