A dental splint is a dental device usually made of acrylic or resistant plastic materials and designed to be placed over the teeth.
It is a personalised tool and is recommended according to the needs of each patient. It is made from moulds of the mouth to ensure a perfect fit.
There are different types of splints and each has its own specific purpose:
Bruxism is commonly described as the involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth and is a condition that affects many people, especially at night. This habit can cause tooth wear, jaw pain, headaches and even tooth fractures if not treated in time.
The HC Marbella Dental Unit offers an effective and personalised solution for each patient: occlusal splints.
It is a completely custom-made dental device, usually made of rigid acrylic or similar material, which is placed over the teeth to protect them from wear and tear caused by grinding or excessive pressure on the teeth. It also helps to relax the jaw muscles and reduce associated discomfort.
- Dental protection: it prevents enamel wear and possible fractures.
- Pain relief: it reduces tension in the jaw and related headaches.
- Improved sleep: by minimising grinding, it promotes a more restful sleep.
- Personalisation: it is designed for each patient and to fit the mouth so as to guarantee comfort and effectiveness.
If you wake up with jaw pain, notice tooth sensitivity, make noises when you sleep (according to your partner or family) or your dentist has detected wear on your teeth, you could be suffering from bruxism. In a consultation, we will assess your case and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
The splints are easy to use and maintain. You only need to clean them with water and a soft brush after each use and store them in their case to increase their lifespan.
If you suspect that bruxism is affecting your quality of life, do not hesitate to contact us and we will inform you of everything you need to know about this personalised treatment.
Mandibular advancement splints are oral devices designed to treat disorders such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea. These splints, also known as mandibular advancement devices (MADs), are placed in the mouth during sleep to keep the jaw and tongue in a forward position, which helps keep the airway open and improve breathing.
These splints serve to prevent airway obstruction, thereby reducing the vibrations that cause snoring; they help prevent pauses in breathing during sleep, improving the quality of rest and diminishing daytime fatigue, irritability and concentration problems.
Splints are indicated for patients with chronic snoring that affects rest, patients with mild to moderate sleep apnoea and for patients with problems tolerating other treatments such as CPAP.
However, not all patients are indicated to wear this splint. The assessment must be made by a specialist and must also be supervised by a pulmonologist specialising in sleep apnoea. In the case of the HC Dental Unit, as it is integrated in the hospital, our specialists in pneumology and sleep apnoea are available to perform the monitoring and subsequent follow-up of the same.
These are designed for the safe application of whitening products at home. A custom-made splint is required for the patient’s mouth.
In orthodontics, splints can be used as retainers following orthodontic treatment to keep the teeth in their new position.
These are essential for contact sports such as boxing, martial arts, rugby, etc. Their function is to prevent broken teeth and severe trauma to the mouth.
