Venous insufficiency is a chronic, progressive and not always benign disease. It is also the most commonly occurring vascular disease amongst the population.
It usually occurs more frequently in women from the age of 35 to 40 due to a hormonal predisposition; prevalence increases with pregnancy and with age (over the age of 50, half of the population will suffer from it).
Varicose veins are a health problem as well as an aesthetic problem.
Apart from their unsightly appearance, they produce discomfort including heaviness, local pain, heat, etc. In some cases they constitute a serious problem for the circulatory system, leading to eczema and ulcers which are difficult to treat and prone to infection.
Why do they occur?
Healthy veins have valves within which when standing prevent venous blood from flowing back down into the leg. The failure of these valves to function produces an accumulation of blood causing the veins to dilate, leading to the appearance of varicose veins.
