Oncology patients

cuidado bucal oncología

Oral care in oncology patients is very important and fundamental to maintain their quality of life and, above all, to prevent any type of complication, especially when undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, as they can affect oral health.

It is also important to bear in mind that some treatments such as radiotherapy (in the head and neck) can affect cells in the mouth and digestive tract. This is commonly referred to as mucositis.

Mucositis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes and can cause redness, swelling and pain in the skin covering the mouth, tongue and lips. You may experience discomfort in your mouth and/or throat, which could prevent you from eating or swallowing normally.

Symptoms of mucositis usually appear within 3-10 days after cancer treatment begins.

HC Marbella Dental Unit would like to give some indications and/or general recommendations for those patients who have to undergo oncological treatment:

cepillado de dientes

  • Maintain daily dental hygiene and brush your teeth gently with a soft bristle toothbrush at least two or three times a day and always use a toothpaste containing fluoride. You should always avoid aggressive brushing that can damage the gums. If your mouth hurts too much, you can use a super-soft toothbrush, which you can find at any pharmacy.
  • The toothbrush should be changed every 3-4 months.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste.
  • If you have dentures, bridges or dental prostheses, remove them and clean them every time you brush your teeth.
  • Use interdental brushes to clean the areas where the traditional toothbrush has difficulty reaching.

  • Try to keep your mouth moist by drinking water frequently or using artificial saliva if there is excessive dryness.
hidratación

  • Avoid acidic, spicy or hard foods that irritate the mouth and stick to soft, fresh options such as purees, vegetable creams or yoghurts
  • Avoid salty foods, citrus fruits and hard, dry and abrasive foods
  • Tomatoes and tomato sauce should also be avoided.
