Laser enucleation for benign prostatic hyperplasia (HoLEP)

láser de holmio para HBP

High-power laser enucleation of the prostate has been shown to be the most effective method for the treatment and relief of symptoms caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

It is a minimally invasive, definitive and effective solution .

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is one of the most common diseases in men, producing voiding symptoms that affect the patient’s quality of life and in some cases can lead to complications such as urine infections, recurrent haematuria, bladder stones, urinary retention or renal failure.

Laser prostate enucleation enables improvement in the patients quality of life by permanently relieving symptoms, without the need to undergo the risks, complications and recovery time involved in open surgery

HC Marbella’s Laser Surgery Unit is made up of a team of urologists with more than 20 years of experience in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia using innovative endoscopic and laser equipment.

¿Qué es la hiperplasia benigna de próstata?

This is a minimally invasive treatment used to treat an enlarged prostate.

It enables removal of all the prostate adenoma which is blocking the urethra and preventing the flow of urine, drastically improving the quality of urination with long-lasting results

Its effectiveness is similar to that of open surgery, but with the great advantage that it does not require any incisions, therefore reducing possible side effects and the length of stay in hospital.

It allows the preservation of removed tissue so it can be analysed by a pathologist, enabling detection of other diseases such as prostate cancer.

The photocoagulation produced by the laser while removing the tissue minimises bleeding as much as possible, preventing possible surgical complications.

  • This procedure can be used to treat prostates of any size and is especially recommended in prostates larger than 40 cc.
  •

  • It is particularly indicated for patients who have obstruction with raised PSA but with low suspicion of tumour, it allows tissue to be removed for pathological analysis, confirming whether a raised PSA is due to BPH.
  •

  • It is indicated for patients on anticoagulation or with an increased risk of bleeding.
  •

  • As it is minimally invasive surgery, it is recommended for patients who are elderly or who also have other conditions.
  •

Surgery is performed endoscopically under general or spinal anaesthetic.

During surgery, a prophylactic antibiotic is administered in order to reduce the risk of infection.

Depending on the size of the prostate, the duration of surgery can be 60-120 min.

The procedure is performed in several steps:

procedimiento enuclación de próstata

1. An instrument called a resectoscope is inserted through the urethra into the bladder. The specialist passes the laser through this to perform enucleation of the prostate adenoma. No incision is made in the skin.

2. Using the laser, the prostate adenoma (tissue that has grown excessively) is separated by resecting it, enucleating it and moving it toward the bladder, leaving the prostate capsule intact.

3. EThe enucleated adenoma is deposited in the bladder and extracted with a morcellator, a device that slices and aspirates the tissue, allowing samples to be obtained for pathological analysis.
