The General Internal Physician is a doctor who assists the patient in an overall, holistic way, assessing the patient as a whole, who does not treat a specific organ but who treats the human body in its entirety.

We can make a certain parallel between the General Internal Physician and the conductor of an orchestra. Each organ has a function, just as each musician has a score. The conductor must be responsible for bringing together the performance of each score. Each instrument must be in harmony with the others.

In the human body, when everything is going well, the brain, the nervous system and the endocrine system are responsible for this coordination. But when one or more organs fail, the body needs help from the General Internal Physician, who will optimise and control treatment so that each organ can develop its function in harmony with the rest of the body.
