World Heart Day 2018 ❤️

*“My Heart, Your Heart” – this year’s motto of the international campaign initiated by the WHO.

*Today, September 29th, we celebrate the World Heart Day 2018. This year’s goal of this global campaign has been to arise awareness towards cardio-vascular disease, still the number one killer world-wide.

It is also a pleasure to finally announce CardioCare, the new international cardio-endovascular center of expertise located at HC Marbella Hospital

Since the year 2000 the World Health Organization (WHO) has dedicated the last Saturday in September to the Heart to underline it’s importance.

Modern, high tech medicine keeps improving the outcome of cardio-vascular disease, by developing effective treatments with lower side effects and of course paying more and more attention to the quality of life of our patients.

And indeed, we have come a long way: it is only in 1901 that we started using electrocardiograms routinely for cardiac diagnosis. This simple diagnostic test we so much take for granted today was even awarded the Nobel Prize in 1924 (recipient was Dr. Einthoven). It is also only since the 1970′ s that we started performing ultrasound on the beating heart, a technology which since then has improved and keeps improving rapidly on a yearly basis: from 2D images we have already moved to high sensitive 3D imaging of moving heart structures.

Coronary artery disease is of great importance and it is only 32 years ago that the first coronary stent was placed. This procedure does not require cutting or opening the chest. It is one of many minimally invasive, endovascular procedures performed by introducing fine catheters through our vessels which have taken over the field of cardiology and nowadays, we cannot imagine ourselves without it – of course to the benefit of our patients: we change diseased heart valves and repair birth defects without opening the chest, we reopen clogged heart vessels by placing stents and burn arrhythmias away.

But the World Heart Day 2018 is not just about modern medicine, it is about what we all can do to keep our hearts strong and healthy because indeed, this little muscle in our chest is truly important to us and to our loved ones. Although medically incorrect, just to emphasize the importance of this little pump, we have made it the home of our most special emotions, so “we love and laugh from our hearts, it is our heart which fills with joy or aches with sorrow, and sometimes it even gets broken”. So please, take care of yourselves, go strong on that exercising, improve your diet and in case you still like to light up that cigarette – it’s time to quit.
