HC Marbella is pleased to welcome Dr María del Mar Villanova López to its medical team. As a specialist in traumatology and orthopaedic surgery, she brings her extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of upper limb conditions and sports medicine, with a focus on functional recovery and the overall wellbeing of each patient.

Dr Villanova López graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona and focused her career on traumatology from the outset, completing her MIR residency at the Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena in Seville, where she acquired a solid foundation in orthopaedic surgery and the comprehensive management of patients with musculoskeletal injuries.
Subsequently, Dr Villanova López supplemented her studies with a Master’s degree in musculoskeletal ultrasound from the Universidad Internacional de la Rioja and a Master’s degree in shoulder surgery from the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía, thus reinforcing her specialisation in the diagnosis and treatment of joint injuries. In addition, she was awarded a Doctorate (PhD) cum laude by the University of Seville for her research on the use of platelet-rich plasma versus hyaluronic acid in patients with coxarthrosis.
Dr Villanova López has developed her career in leading hospitals both in Spain and abroad, participating in specialised units for arthroscopy, septic pathology and hand surgery. This experience has allowed her to acquire in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of modern traumatology.
Currently, Dr Villanova is focusing her specialisation on upper limb surgery (including shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist) and sports medicine. In these areas, she applies a precise and personalised approach to optimise the functional recovery and well-being of each patient.
Furthermore, Dr Villanova is a member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SECOT), actively contributing to the scientific development and professional advancement of her speciality.
Throughout her career, Dr. Villanova López has received several awards and grants that endorse her commitment to research and continuous improvement. These include the SECOT National Research Grant (2014), Best Communication awards at the SOMACOT (2014) and SATO (2019) congresses, and the Academic Excellence Award granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2004.
