Rising life expectancy has led to an increase in the number of older people in our society, making dementia a priority medical problem. As the population ages, dementia-related diseases have become increasingly frequent.
The Dementia Unit treats patients with dementia using a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach, as well as providing continuous care throughout the disease (for both patients and relatives).
Our focus is on addressing medical convalescence, dealing with the decline in functional behaviour, and providing social and family support, all with the aim of reintegrating the patient within the family and the community.
▪ Test and treatment for dementia
▪ Screening for dementia in patients with memory problems, frequent forgetfulness, and mild cognitive impairment; tests include:
▪ ▪ Neurological and neuropsychological testing
Ageing involves the loss of cognitive abilities to the point where this interferes with daily activities.
Symptoms of this disease can vary. Among the first warning signs are memory loss, behavioural or emotional changes, the loss of vocabulary or the inability to make certain fine motor movements.
As part of the non-pharmacological treatment options for dementia, the Diagnosis and Therapy Unit provides help for people suffering from dementia, focusing on three basic aspects:
▪ Group sessions: The goal is to improve social relationships.
▪ Work at home: This continues therapy at home by having patients do a number of exercises which are tailored to their abilities in order to promote cognitive stimulation.
▪ Family involvement: Family members discuss topics related to dealing with situations of conflict at home.
