The bone structures and joints of the foot and ankle are exposed to continuous movement, supporting the weight of the whole body. As a result, these structures are frequently damaged, due to overload, or due to direct damage in young people and athletes. Because they are working continuously, they can also become deformed due to chronic wear and tear.

The most common injuries seen in young people and athletes include ankle sprains, ankle instability, ruptures and injuries of the Achilles’ tendon; whilst the most common degenerative conditions include bunions (hallux valgus), Morton’s neuroma and hammer toes. Cartilage lesions also affect the ankle joint.

Ankle arthroscopy and foot microsurgery are advanced modern orthopaedic techniques which offer alternative, much less invasive treatment than traditional surgery. For chondral lesions and osteochondritis dissecans, new treatments have been developed, such as autologous chondrocyte implantation.
