Doppler ultrasound

Doppler ultrasound MarbellaA Doppler ultrasound uses high frequency (ultrasonic) sound waves and reproduces images of the internal organs for diagnostic purposes.

The ideal medium for propagating waves is an aqueous structure (a conductive gel), so it is not used to evaluate bone tissues or organs with high air content.

Doppler technology makes it possible to visualise the flow velocity of the waves that pass through certain body structures, usually blood vessels. The technique lets physicians determine whether the flow is directed toward the probe or whether it moves away from it, as well as the speed of the flow.

By calculating the variation in the volume frequency in a particular sample—for example, the blood flow in a heart valve—the speed and direction of flow can be determined and visualised.

The procedure is performed by the medical radiologist, who applies the gel to the part of the body that is to be analysed and moves the transducer, which emits ultrasonic waves that are reflected back when they hit the structure of interest, which in turn generates an image.
